New ‘mega airport’ in China now officially open

Chengdu Tianfu International Airport has officially begun operations, offering a new hub to domestic travellers.

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, is the third city in China to have two international airports, alongside Shanghai and Beijing.

With a capacity to handle 60 million passengers a year and built at a cost of $10.8 billion, the new airport has three runways and two terminals.

State media outlet Xinhua reported the airport will eventually house terminals capable of handling 120 million passengers a year, and will also welcome visitors from overseas when international travel resumes after the pandemic.

According to the figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), China’s domestic traffic was up 6.8% in April 2021, compared with April 2019.

The country’s ultimate goal is to have 400 airports operational by 2035, up from the current 241, according to the Transportation Network Planning Outline issued by the government in early 2021.
